Role Summary

The Automation Manager is responsible for successful delivery of projects by organizing the Automation team, partners, process, and technology when projects utilize automated fabrication methods. This position requires proactive management of the automation process with all parties ensuring coordinated documents and schedules that support the production  goals. All activities will be performed in support of the strategy, vision and values of JE Dunn.

Key Role Responsibilities - Core

DESIGN MANAGEMENT FAMILY – CORE

  • Interprets  fabrication drawings and develops internal work plans, collaborating with design team, production team , and other key stakeholders.
  • Understands production team’s business needs and helps create or coordinate an automation plans to support production strategies.
  • Reviews and understands shop drawings and provides input to internal and external design teams on how designs can better support an automated production model.
  • Manages external vendor relationships, assuring they meet the technical, quality as well as schedule requirements for automation deliverables.
  • Manages the automation review process with design team and production team to ensure schedules are met and identifies project risks and opportunities as related to automated production throughout the design phase.
  • Leverages design experiences and knowledge to work with design team to identifying solutions for  project specific challenges while influencing expectations for automated production  and quality control.
  • Capable of developing sketches and plans to assist design and production team with conceptual ideas.
  • Coordinates automation strategies with the production and design team.
  • Manages digital automation documentation such  past programs, programing best practices, tool libraries, value stream maps, run time calculations, and shop drawings.
  • Reviews design and provides quality control review comments to ensure the design is able to be to be executed with the use of automated equipment. -
  • Tracks costs of automation and provides input on improvements to increase efficiency.
  • Inspires a sense of team in the work environment. Utilizes communication and conflict resolution skills to help foster teamwork and collaboration.
  • Demonstrates willingness and ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally to obtain information or solve problems in support of the team’s goals. 
  • Demonstrates positive approaches to adapting to change. Supports corporate and work program and/or department change initiatives.
  • Manages time and tracks project hours for billing purposes.
  • Identifies and communicates potential design issues to team and redesigns products to improve functionality.
  • Creates rough sketches and detailed designs with computer-aided design (CAD) software and reviews them along with the engineering team.
  • Develop, edit, and optimize CNC programs for a variety of wood & metal machining operations (plasma, router, press brake, waterjet, etc.) using CAD/CAM software or manual programming methods.
  • Ensure CNC programs are safe, accurate, efficient, and meet design specifications and tolerances.
  • Set up CNC machines and tooling libraries, including loading programs, setting tool offsets, and ensuring proper calibration and alignment.
  • Evaluate CNC machine operations during new production runs to ensure quality standards are maintained.
  • Responsible for coordinating the schedules of all automation programing staff with production and project management team.
  • Responsible for overseeing the automation team.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to perform work accurately and completely, and in a timely manner
  • Communication skills, verbal and written – Intermediate
  • Ability to conduct effective presentations
  • Proficiency in MS Office – Intermediate
  • Thorough knowledge of project processes and how each supports the successful completion of a project
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, internally and externally
  • Ability to apply Lean process and philosophy – Intermediate
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, , Google SketchUp, and Bluebeam.
  • Proficient in multiple CAM software platforms.
  • Ability to think in a highly structured manner along all design disciplines while also having creativity to develop specialized solutions by anticipating potential challenges
  • Ability to manage budget and schedule, maximize profitability and generate future work through building relationships
  • Ability to build relationships with team members that transcend a project

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Assumes responsibility for day-to-day financial management of automation team and consumables by understanding the budget, accurately forecasting and limiting month-to-month fluctuations.
  • Maintains fiscal records and follows procedures to ensure effective and efficient operations.
  • Understands business plan and manages financial goals.
  • Makes operational decisions in light of broader financial goals and constraints

  • Inspires a sense of team in the work environment. Utilizes communication and conflict resolution skills to help foster teamwork and collaboration. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude, maintaining composure under pressure.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, or related field (Preferred)
  • In lieu of the above requirements, equivalent relevant experience will be considered

Experience

  • 5+ years design and/or production automation management experience (Required)
  • 3+ years experience as Project Manager (Preferred)
  • Cross-functional knowledge of the key engineering disciplines (Architectural, Structural, MEP) and relevant trade

Working Environment

  • Valid and unrestricted drivers license required
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
  • May require extensive periods of travel
  • Must be willing to work non-traditional hours to meet project needs
  • May be exposed to extreme conditions (hot or cold)
  • Assignment location may include project sites and/or in the office
  • Frequent activity: Sitting, Viewing Computer Screen
  • Occasional activity: Standing, Walking, Bending, Climbing, Reaching above Shoulder, Pushing, Pulling
