Role Summary

Aptitude, a subsidiary of JE Dunn, is the provider of digital and physical connectivity solutions that use a unique combination of tailor-made design processes and cutting-edge technology to deliver connected built-environments for commercial real estate. Leveraging the insight and experience of over a century in design-build from our parent company, Aptitude manages the full scope of building connectivity, helping owners and operators lower costs, increase efficiencies and get more value out of their properties through innovative, goal-oriented building development and management.


Aptitude is currently seeking a Division 27/28 Operations Manager in Kansas City, Missouri. 

Key Role Responsibilities - Core


  • Provides leadership in all aspects of the company’s safety culture and creates awareness by demonstrating a commitment to an injury-free environment through individual actions and mentoring others.
  • Provides strategic direction to team members in light of broader Aptitude strategic plans across all areas of the project including resource management, financial management, client development, and growth.
  • Provides oversight on the activities to establish the Aptitude offering as a differentiator that supports JE Dunn as an industry leader to local civic organizations and municipalities.
  • Leads the technology consulting process between JE Dunn and client or owner’s consultants and contractors to grow the Aptitude contribution to the organization.
  • Serves as the highest escalation point for all projects, financial, business development, contractual and client relationship risk for the Aptitude program.  Oversees periodic project risk assessments and communicates various risks to Aptitude leadership.  Provides oversight to ensure appropriate solutions are implemented for identified risks.  Conducts project risk assessments and escalates various risks to leadership to provide visibility, mitigate risk and create appropriate solutions.
  • Oversees resource management plans to ensure proper staffing levels and results are on target relative to contractual commitments, schedules, staffing levels and constraints.
  • Partners with the Business Unit Leaders and Project Executives to develop business plans and operational decisions.  Oversees those plans to ensure short and long term performance goals are met or exceeded.
  • Provides oversight to the comprehensive organization communication on Aptitude integration as part of regional strategies.
  • Measures Aptitude metrics and provides timely analytics using internal tools. 
  • Leads, supports and promotes a culture of diversity and inclusion within JE Dunn.  Understands JE Dunn’s policy of non-discrimination and ensures positive, proactive implementation throughout the organization.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to perform work accurately and completely, and in a timely manner.
  • Communication skills, verbal and written – Advanced.
  • Ability to conduct effective presentations – Advanced.
  • Proficiency in MS Office – Intermediate.
  • Thorough knowledge of project processes and how each supports the successful completion of a project.
  • Thorouh knowledge of Information Technology/Security/Life Safety/Energy/Building Automation related systems – Advanced.
  • Proficiency in project management and accounting software such as CMiC – Intermediate.
  • Proficiency in required construction technology – Advanced.
  • Ability to apply Lean process and philosophy – Intermediate.
  • Ability to manage budgets, maximize profitability, and generate future work – Advanced.
  • Ability to complete estimating and productivity analysis.
  • Demonstrated track record of successful completion of projects from start to finish – Advanced.
  • Thorough knowledge of MBE (Minority Business Enterprise), WBE (Women Owned Business Enterprise), and SBA (Small Business Administration) regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge and application of corporate risk management policies.
  • Ability to quickly and effectively solve complex problems.
  • Ability to develop and communicate a leadership vision to the work program.
  • Ability to influence and persuade others and obtain trust and buy-in to achieve results.
  • Ability to accomplish results primarily by delegating and working through others.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, internally and externally.


  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering or related field. 
  • In lieu of the above requirements, equivalent relevant experience will be considered.


  • 10+ years construction management experience.
  • 5+ years people management experience.
  • Demonstrated success in simultaneously leading multiple large or complex projects and/or multiple teams.

Working Environment

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
  • May require periods of overnight travel
  • Must be willing to work non-traditional hours to meet project needs
  • Normal office environment, but may be exposed to extreme conditions (hot or cold)
  • Frequent activity: Standing, Walking, Sitting, Viewing Computer Screen
  • Occasional activity: Bending, Climbing, Reaching above Shoulder, Pushing, Pulling
