IT Data Engineer

Role Summary

The IT Data Engineer will be responsible for designing and maintaining scalable and reliable data infrastructures and ensuring efficient data flow from diverse sources. This role will develop and optimize data pipelines, establish data quality standards, and support analytics and data science projects. All activities will be performed in support of the strategy, vision, and values of JE Dunn.

Key Role Responsibilities - Core

DATA ENGINEERING FAMILY – CORE

• Understands business needs and gathers requirements. Analyzes, designs, develops, tests, trains, and deploys mission-critical business solutions.
• Designs, constructs, installs, and maintains large-scale data processing systems and other infrastructure, including databases and data lakes.
• Designs and creates data models and structures for data warehousing, data lakes, and other advanced data platforms.
• Creates, optimizes, and maintains pipelines to transform and transfer data from diverse sources into databases, data lakes, or other systems.
• Develops and maintains robust ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to ingest data from various sources into centralized repositories, ensuring data quality and integrity.
• Designs and implements data models to support analytical and reporting requirements, optimizing for performance and scalability.
• Transforms raw data into meaningful insights by applying data cleansing, normalization, and enrichment techniques.
• Automates data pipeline workflows and scheduling tasks to streamline data processing and reduce manual intervention.
• Identifies and resolves performance bottlenecks in data processing pipelines and queries, optimizing for speed and efficiency.
• Works with data analysts, application development teams, and stakeholders to ensure data accessibility and reliability for analytics and data projects.
• Establishes data quality standards and creates monitoring systems to ensure high data accuracy and reliability along with appropriate governance controls.
• Implements mechanisms to safeguard data, ensuring data privacy and compliance with relevant regulations.
• Establishes and enforces data governance policies and standards to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and data privacy laws.
• Researches and adopts new technologies, techniques, and best practices in data engineering and database management.
• Supports analytics of companywide projects, including usage, metrics, and visualizations.
• Participates in the implementation of best practices surrounding business intelligence (BI) solution development and administration.
• Identifies user trends based on analytics to determine future application changes.
• Works with cross-functional teams to make actionable recommendations based on research findings, business needs, and technical limitations.
• Conveys complex technical concepts to both peers and stakeholders and translates business needs into technical specifications and solutions.
• Develops and maintains user training and program documentation.
• Provides training and technical guidance to peers and clients as necessary.

• Proficiency in Python, ideally with experience working with notebooks.
• Understanding of ETL / ELT processes and techniques.
• Ability to evaluate data against expected results with a strong attention to detail.
• Ability to connect to multiple data sets and import data and transform that data to support data visualizations and further analyses.
• Ability to create advanced context calculations on data sets.
• Proficiency in delivering data visualizations to internal and external customers based on project requirements.
• Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, internally and externally.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in business intelligence, data visualization or related field (Required)
• In lieu of the above requirements, equivalent relevant experience will be considered.

Experience

• 1+ years business intelligence or data visualization experience (Preferred).
• 1+ years of experience with data pipelines (Preferred).
• 1+ years of experience with relational databases (MS SQL Server or Oracle) (Preferred).
