Role Summary

The Senior Drafting Technician will be responsible for supporting project teams, fulfilling project needs utilizing 2d and 3d software. This position will also be responsible for gathering drawings and specifications, calculating material and equipment requirements, and setting up production methods interacting with the fabrication team to produce products.  All activities will be performed in support of the strategy, vision and values of JE Dunn.

Key Role Responsibilities - Core

DRAFTING TECHNICIAN FAMILY - CORE

  • Follows specifications and contract documents to create various technical drawings.
  • Creates rough sketches and detailed designs with 2D and 3D modeling software and reviews them along with the engineering team.
  • Utilizes 2d and 3d software to calculates, compiles and sort data to inform various business needs dimensions, weight limitations and requirements for materials being used.
  • Coordinates drawings to city and government requirements.
  • Prepares, reviews, and redrafts designs with the shop and project team.
  • Identifies and communicates potential design issues to team and redesigns products to improve functionality.
  • Coordinates with architects and engineers to gather product and structural requirements and incorporates into designs.
  • Communicates with the project team or design professional to get all the details necessary to design and draw the required component or assembly.
  • Designs diagrams, maps and layouts to illustrate workflow and assembly process.
  • Ensures final designs comply with regulations and quality standards.
  • Creates manuals that describe existing products’ operation, features and maintenance.
  • Inspires a sense of team in the work environment. Utilizes communication and conflict resolution skills to help foster teamwork and collaboration.
  • Demonstrates willingness and ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally to obtain information or solve problems in support of the team’s goals. 
  • Demonstrates positive approaches to adapting to change. Supports corporate and work program and/or department change initiatives.
  • Manages time and tracks project hours for billing purposes.
  • Works at the direction of internal design manager, drafting manager, or engineer to complete projects.

Key Role Responsibilities - Additional Core

SENIOR DRAFTING TECHNICIAN

In addition, this position will be responsible for the following:

  • Collaborates with external architects and engineers, and incorporates knowledge gained into drawings.
  • Evaluates and modifies drawings accordingly to enhance efficiencies and help improve the prefab shop processes.
  • Manages design schedule to achieve multiple deadlines on a variety of projects.
  • May be responsible for leading design review meetings with fabrication team.
  • Provides on-the-job guidance and willingly shares subject matter expertise to support team members’ learning and development. 
  • Identifies issues with contract documents and provides solutions for evaluation by owner, architect, and project team.
  • Researches and evaluates new drafting and modeling software to improve efficiencies.
  • May be responsible for describing production methods step-by-step including equipment and software types to be used.
  • Responsible for taking measurements on a construction site, as needed, to incorporate into drawings being produced for fabrication purposes.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to perform work accurately and completely, and in a timely manner
  • Communication skills, verbal and written
  • Knowledge of organizational structure and available resources
  • Ability to identify common construction materials and shop equipment
  • Proficiency with Inventor software - Advanced 
  • Ability to convert a 2D CAD file into a Computer Numeric Control (CNC) program
  • Proficiency in parametric modeling software (fusion 360, autodesk inventor, or solidworks)
  • Proficiency in math-based skills and ability to convert between units
  • Knowledge of layout skills
  • Ability to read and understand plans, drawings and specifications
  • Ability to assess and optimize project productivity
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, both internally and externally

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • Associate’s degree in design, drafting, architecture or related field (Preferred)
  • Vocational or Technical training (Preferred)
  • In lieu of the above requirements, equivalent relevant experience will be considered.

Experience

  • 5+ years design or related experience (Required)
  • 2+ years experience drawing components for construction projects (Required)
  • 2+ years experience with Inventor software (Preferred) 

Working Environment

  • Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds
  • Maintenance facility environment, may be exposed to varying temperatures, moving equipment, noise and exhaust fumes
  • Ability to work on site as needed
  • May require working overtime as needed
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Frequent activity: Sitting, Viewing Computer Screen
  • Occasional activity: Standing, Walking, Bending, Climbing, Reaching above Shoulder, Pushing, Pulling
